A Summer Day
The morning stood all bathed in dew
Beneath the vast expanse of blue.
The day, exquisite to behold,
Brought new visions to my soul.
The air was warm and motionless;
The world seemed void of all distress.
Unbroken thoughts, a prayer or two –
‘Tis God’s reflections shining through.
Gene Appleby
I will miss you all and will keep you in my prayers. May God hold you and keep you until our paths cross again.

Dear Parents,
It’s hard to believe that the fourth quarter of the 2008-2009 school year started on March 30. The sunshine gives us hope for warmer weather!
CABARET
The fabulous performances at the annual CKS Cabaret this past weekend were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who attended. The extra effort and energy expended over the past month were reflected in this year’s outstanding event. Sincere thanks for everyone's contributions to this memorable school extravaganza. Special acknowledgement is given to the Director, Aida Cadrecha and Co-Director, Trisha Becker and Tracey Whitney, Faculty Representative. Christie Yager and Tricia Becker deserve special recognition for the incredible work done in creating and decorating the stage for Cabaret. Your talent does not go un-noticed. Tammy Avonda’s and Michael Ploof’s technical expertise is invaluable and they deserve special thanks for a job well done. All participants should be recognized for their outstanding jobs in the performance. We are truly blessed and sincerely grateful to the many volunteers involved in this event! In addition, we wish to express our gratitude to the Silent and Live Auction Committee and Chair, Barb Rouleau for her hard work. Mrs. Rouleau would like to send a HUGE “THANK YOU” to everyone who participated in the Silent Auction. The Silent Auction/Cabaret continues to be the largest fundraiser for the school netting over $17,000 again this year. In spite of a poor economy, the committee was able to solicit a great range of donations from local businesses, and the participation from attendees at the show was excellent. A new addition this year was hand made items from our own classes and individual students. The second grade table (purchased for a dollar and donated) had a hand painted sunflower and was signed by all the students-sold for $150!!! Thanks to all for your continued support of this event! Both the Silent and Live Auction were, once again, an enormous success.
Thank you.

Congratulations to all of the coaches and students who participated in this event. Their dedication and hard work brought successful results. We are very proud of you.

March 4th Newsletter
Dear Parents,
MONSIGNOR ROLAND RIVARD
It is with great pleasure that we announce that Fr. Rivard has received the title of “Monsignor”. This is a title of distinction given by the Pope to certain priests in the Roman Catholic Church as part of a papal honor recognizing the priest’s service to the Church. The diocesan bishop nominates candidates for the honor. Congratulations to Msgr. Rivard on a title well earned.
LENT
The Lenten season begins on Ash Wednesday, February 25. Since Ash Wednesday falls during school vacation, our Pre-lenten Mass, led by the students in grade six, will take place on Friday, February 20th at 8:30 AM. All students will attend and parents are welcome to join us. This is an excellent time to assess our commitment as individuals and as members of a school community to almsgiving, abstinence and prayer in the name of Jesus Christ. Rice Bowls will be distributed before school is dismissed for Winter Recess. In preparation for Easter, the students will be collecting money in these rice bowls at home, attending morning Mass as schedules permit, and fulfilling classroom Lenten observances. (Please note that all money collected by our students will be forwarded to Operation Rice Bowl. This is the Lenten program of Catholic Relief Services, the official overseas relief and development agency of the U. S. Catholic community. 75% of the proceeds from Operation Rice Bowl fund programs, which positively affects tens of thousands of lives around the world. Please note that 25% of contributions support hunger and poverty alleviation programs in our diocese). The filled boxes should be brought back to school by Holy Thursday, April 9th.
SUMMER CLOTHING DONATIONS FOR CONGO
Father Daniel Lokango is returning to speak to our students about the Congo on Wednesday, February 18th. Last year, he mentioned how he collects items for his return trip. They need summer clothing of all sizes, especially children’s clothing. There will be a bin in the school lobby for any donations you can contribute for this worthwhile cause. Thank you for your help.
AWARDS
Congratulations to the following students who received awards from Marriage, Family & Respect Life Ministries of Vermont Catholic Charities for their essays on “What is a Christian Marriage?” Kristen Schumacher won a Regional Prize and Lucy Terrien won an Honorable Mention.
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK
Thank you to all who contributed to such a memorable weeklong celebration of Christ the King School during National Catholic Schools Week. We are proud to announce that our school-wide Community Outreach Pennies for Peace that benefited the Bwindi Community Hospital through our local organization TOUCH Uganda, Inc. (Sheila Morrissey, co-founder – mother of Michael Morrissey, Gr. 7) raised $372.35. Thank you to everyone who participated. We continue to collect funds for this worthy cause. The donation jar is located in the lobby.
CKS VOLUNTEERS
The PTO board would like to thank everyone for coming to our school-wide PTO meeting and also for the thoughtful discussions we had that night. You can find the final minutes for that meeting at the following link: February 4th Meeting Minutes. “WHY SHOULD WE CARE?” Our theme for the 2009 CKS Science Fair, Thursday Evening, Feb. 19 (the Thursday before winter break) 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM
This year’s science fair promises to be very different from what has come to be the norm for middle-school science fairs. There are no “coca cola/chicken egg” projects! This year we have challenged the kids with the question “WHY SHOULD WE CARE?” when they were choosing their subject matter. Their responses to that challenge have been nothing short of amazing. We have everything from projects that will improve your skin health,… to projects that test the “5 second rule” and the “backwash effect”,… to projects that will surprise you about climate change and conservation. The kids have also gone the extra mile to present their projects more carefully and professionally than we have ever seen. They are easy on the eye and models of scientific method. The top projects will represent CKS at the State Science Fair, March 28th.
You may know that the CKS student who went to the State Science Fair last year won in his category. He won $600, and was promised a summer job by a wind energy tech firm! Prize money from different organizations like the Society of Women Engineers and others totals more than $9000.
*An interest in science and technology can become a life’s passion. It all starts at this age… The kids need our encouragement. Did you know that jobs in Science and Mathematics are growing at 4 times the rate of all other categories? Did you know that 30% of the jobs 10 years from now will be in fields that haven’t even been invented yet?
Steering our children towards fields in Science, Math and Technology may be the key to their secure and satisfying futures.
Make time to be there if you can this year! And leave yourself plenty of time to visit with each presenter. You’ll need it to take advantage of all the new insights. This year, the science fair is sure to change your routines and your perspective!
by: Dr. Lynda M. Ulrich, Parent Science Fair Coordinator and assistant to Mrs.Srivastava
A footnote: This year’s science fair will feature grades 6 through 8, but next year 5th graders will be included. If you have a fourth or fifth grader, it would be great to see you there with them, as they will be in the thick of things next year! It would be great exposure.
SIGN LANGUAGE
Please go to the following link for the flier on the second session of Sign Language:
CELEBRATING READING AND DR. SEUSS’ BIRTHDAY
The week of March 2 Christ the King School will be celebrating the zany and creative books that is Dr. Seuss’ legacy to literacy. Each year Dr. Seuss’ contribution to reading is celebrated around his birthday, March 2. “Part of Dr. Seuss’ charm is his ability to make the ordinary into the extraordinary.” He wrote 49 books, which have been translated into 15 different languages and sold 200 million copies. His books are still enjoyed today by both children and adults. Dr. Seuss’ books will be read in the classrooms the week of March 2. Middle School students will read to younger students and other class activities will be available.
WINTER RECESS
Remember, all CKS students and personnel will be enjoying school vacation from February 23 through February 27. School resumes on Monday, March 2. I hope you have a relaxing and enjoyable vacation.
CHRIST THE KING SCHOOL CABARET 2009 – March 20 & 21
All of our students will begin practicing for this year’s Cabaret this week. Reminder that each homeroom participates by either singing and/or dancing on Friday night (odd numbered grades PK, 1, 3, 5, 7) or Saturday night (even numbered grades PS, K, 2, 4, 6). Our eighth graders will perform on both nights. This fun-filled event has been a school wide tradition for the past fifteen years and has proven to be a spirit-building event for the entire community. This year’s theme is “Around the World with Christ the King School.” Doors will open at 5:30 PM and the performance will start at 7:00 PM. A letter with information regarding ticket sales will be posted on www.cksvt.org Ticket prices are as follows: adults - $5.00; seniors - $3.00; children (5 & over not performing) - $3.00. The permission form for individual acts is available in the classroom, library or office. The cut-off date for submitting individual acts is March 1. Please see the Cabaret Handbook posted on our website for important information regarding Cabaret and individual acts.
SILENT AUCTION
Solicitation for donations for the 2009 Cabaret and Silent Auction is well under way! We are receiving great donations daily!! After hearing parent concerns about the classroom baskets at the last PTO meeting, we decided to remove this burden from the parents at this time and will evaluate adding a basket raffle to a different event during the year! Instead of classroom baskets, we are changing the classroom donation to an art project that can be displayed and auctioned off at the event! This will be a fun way for the children to be involved in the fundraiser!! Most of these projects will be created during class time. If teachers need assistance with materials or time, they will send a call for help through the classroom parents! As we move closer to the event, we are actively soliciting donations of products, services and gift certificates!! If you have an idea for a donation or would like to help solicit for donations, please call or email Barb Rouleau (brouleau@christthekingburlington.org or 802 -363-1706).
Shaws is now beginning to handle non profit donations by use of your Shaws card. We still receive 1% back in cash, but no more saving receipts.
DRESS CODE ADDITION
Some of our parents have expressed an interest in “one stop shopping” for school uniforms. Arrangements have been made with Lands’ End to offer their short-sleeve and long-sleeve mesh polos with our school logo in addition to the school uniform pants, skirts and skorts. These polo shirts will be available in regular fit or feminine fit with the price range being from $21 - $30. Please note that school uniform shirts will continue to be available from A-Z Embroidery if you wish to order from them. To order from Lands’ End:
May God bless and keep you in His gentle care now and always.

To ensure the safety of children and in compliance with our approved traffic plan, the Employee Parking Lot is not for student drop off or pick up. Only a parent with a handicapped license plate who is dropping off a student in Preschool or Pre-kindergarten is allowed to briefly park in this lot in the morning. Students in grades K-8 are to be dropped off in the lower (west) parking lot. This is the designated parent parking lot for drop off and pick up of students. If you are entering the building with your child, please park in the lower lot (west) and proceed to the main entrance of the school. In the afternoon at dismissal, only parents with a handicapped license plate with a student in Preschool/Pre-kindergarten is authorized to park in the Employee Parking Lot. January 15, 2009 - Newsletter
Dear Parents,
Happy New Year! I hope that the year ahead is a holy, happy and healthy one for you and those you love. The month of January promises to be a busy and productive one for all of the grades.
Here are a few notes of interest:
FIRST RECONCILIATION
Our second graders received the blessed sacrament of Reconciliation on Monday, January 12 in preparation for their First Holy Communion in May. Please remember them in your prayers as they prepare their hearts for Jesus.
NO SCHOOL
There will be no school on Monday, January 19, 2009, in observance of the federal holiday honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. Also, mark your calendars for winter recess, February 23 through February 27 with school resuming on Monday, March 2.
FIRST NIGHT PARADE AND VKAT
A huge THANK YOU to Mrs. Barbara Rouleau, the five families and VKAT representatives who braved the cold on New Year’s Eve for the First Night Burlington parade. It was a celebration of the quadracentennial of Lake Champlain. Christ the King was well represented with our banner carried proud and high, canoes being “paddling” by the children down Church Street, and a few fish jumping through the crowd!! The students handed out VKAT bracelets, tattoos and $8.00 bills.
SIXTH GRADERS CELEBRATE
Thank you to Mrs. Heller, our sixth grade parents and students who celebrated the Eucharistic Liturgies for the sick and shut-ins on Monday, January 12, 2009 filmed at the Bishop Brady Center (Diocesan Office).
GEOBEE
On Tuesday, January 13, seven Christ the King students competed for the chance to represent our school at the state GeoBee championship in the spring. After one hour of some very difficult questions, we had three contestants in the final round: Sean Healey, Conor Bauman and Audrey Terrien. Congratulations to Sean who placed third, Conor in second and to Audrey, the champion. It was a great competition and we look forward to cheering Audrey on in Middlebury this spring.
PRE-REGISTRATION FOR 2009-2010 SCHOOL YEAR
A pre-registration form for next year was mailed to each family. One form is to be completed per family and returned with the $100 registration fee (per child). The registration fee is a yearly fee paid for both returning and new students. The due date for this form and fee is February 13, in order for us to begin planning for next year. It is especially important to return this form as soon as possible especially if you have a new sibling hoping to attend Christ the King School during the 2009-2010 school year. Priority is given to “registered” families, first. After February 13 placement is open to all and will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
A 2009-2010 Financial Aid form was included with the Pre-registration form. If you wish to apply for financial aid, a completed application along with a copy of your 2008 tax return is due in the school office by February 13. Please send in a sealed envelope marked “Financial Aid.”
END OF SECOND QUARTER
The second quarter of this school year ends on Friday, January 16.
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK
Catholic Schools Week, the annual celebration of Catholic schools and their contribution to their communities and the nation, is set for January 25 through January 31, 2009. As students begin the new semester in Catholic schools around the country, they are being invited to “Celebrate Service” by volunteering in the community or parish. The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2009 is “Catholic Schools Celebrate Service.” Millions of students are expected to participate in observance of this annual event, begun in 1974. A detailed schedule of events follows this letter.
OPEN HOUSE
January begins our enrollment drive for the 2009-2010 school year. An Open House is scheduled for January 28th from 8-11 AM. Please tell your friends and neighbors about this wonderful opportunity to see our school.
CABARET NEWS
CHRIST THE KING SCHOOL CABARET 2009 – March 20 & 21
Very soon our students will begin practicing for Cabaret. During Cabaret, each homeroom participates by either singing and/or dancing on Friday night (odd numbered grades PK, 1, 3, 5, 7) or Saturday night (even numbered grades PS, K, 2, 4, 6). Our eighth graders will perform on both nights. This wonderful event has been a school wide tradition for the past fifteen years and has proven to be a spirit-building event for the entire community. This year’s theme is “Around the World with Christ the King School.” We need talented and energetic volunteers to help some of our teachers with choreographing class acts, costuming and set designs. If you can help, please contact Mrs. C at 862-6696, ext 207 or e-mail acadrecha@christthekingburlington.org
HOOPS FOR LITERACY
We are currently engaged in a literacy program in conjunction with the UVM men’s basketball team. Each student at the school is setting a literacy goal to accomplish by April. As students reach their goals, they will put their name and their goal on a construction paper basketball, which will be hung in the school gym. In April, the students who have met their goal will be invited to a shoot around with the UVM men’s team.
TARDINESS
There has been an increase in the number of tardy students arriving after the 8:00 AM bell. This not only creates work for the office staff, but also the child/ren’s teacher. Generally, these students miss the lunch count and any morning directions communicated by the teacher. It is also a disruption to classes when students arrive late. Please arrive prior to the 8:AM bell. Thank you for understanding.
DREIDEL TOURNAMENT
The Middle School participated in the third annual CKS Dreidel Tournament the week before break. There was some spectacular spinning going on in Mr. Friedman's room and the best part is that the students could eat their winnings. After the last dreidel dropped, the class winners were Genevieve O'Brien for the 6th grade, Connor Trieb 7th grade and Jamie Bunch 8th grade. On Friday at lunch, the 3 champions spun it out in front of an enthusiastic middle school crowd. In the end, Genevieve came in 3rd, Jamie second and Connor won with a world record (at least a CKS record) 10 gimmel spins in a row! (Winner take all.) Prizes were awarded and there was much "nachas" (joy) in the cafeteria after all the spinning was spun.
Jesus called the children to Himself and said, “Let the children come to Me and do not prevent them; for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Luke 18:16
Sincerely,
MaryBeth Davidson, Principal
